HSE Students Win Gold Medals at International Mathematical Olympiad in Ashgabat
The 5th Open Mathematical Olympiad for University Students (OMOUS-2025) took place in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, attracting teams from Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Indonesia, Iran, Romania, Poland, the United Arab Emirates, Russia, and India. In total, around 500 students took part in the event.
Representing HSE University were four undergraduate students from the Faculty of Computer Science’s Applied Mathematics and Information Science programme—Vasily Silvestrov, Bogdan Butyrin, Daniil Soulnov, and Anastasia Salimova—along with their coach, Igor Vorontsov, an expert at the Centre of Student Competitions.
The olympiad consisted of two rounds: individual and team-based. The individual round lasted four hours and included six problems to solve. In this round, the HSE students achieved excellent results and were awarded gold medals.
The team round took place the following day and lasted two hours, during which participants had to solve ten problems. The HSE team earned second place, scoring 69 out of 100 points.
Vasily Silvestrov
While preparing with problems from previous years, we realised the olympiad would not be easy, but we felt we had a good chance of winning gold medals. It was my first international olympiad, which naturally made me a bit nervous. We gained a lot of points during the appeals process. We spent two nights preparing for it: writing alternative solutions and developing criteria for them. Overall, it was an unforgettable experience—fascinating culture, a beautiful city, and delicious food. I would like to thank the olympiad organisers for their excellent choice and preparation of the problems. We hope our university teams will achieve similarly strong results next year.
