HSE Student Places Third at National Student Research Paper Competition
Maria Krivosheina, a second-year student in HSE’s Comparative Studies: Russian Literature in Cross-cultural Perspective master’s programme, placed third in Russia’s national student research paper competition in the category of Humanities and Social Sciences. Maria’s research focused on problems with how Sherlock Holmes was perceived in Russia at the beginning of the 20th century.
The National Student Research Paper Competition took place as part of the Science of the Future research forum, which brings together junior researchers and students, both undergraduate and graduate, who have all won their university’s research paper contests. The forum serves as a platform for participants to discuss their research findings, meet with the academic community to exchange new information and ideas, improve international collaboration, and integrate Russia into the international scientific community. The forum featured 10 sections in various scientific fields.
There were 338 finalists, 32 of whom took home a prize.
The main thing that impressed me was not only the forum’s general scope, but also its interdisciplinary nature, which was demonstrated by the diverse range of sections at the forum. This includes agro-, bio-, and food-related technologies; energy and engineering; medicine and life science; information technology and computer systems; and much more. I’d like to mention the science popularisation section in particular, which was organised by editor-in-chief of the online scientific publication N+1 Andrei Konyaev. This section featured speakers from a number of different projects, including Arzamas, N+1, and Kurilka Gutenberg. My section, Humanities and Social Sciences, also had a unique selection of research papers on topics such as morphological parsing in Old Tatar, landscape painting, developmental problems in premature babies, and the Russian constitution. My own paper was called Sherlock Holmes in Russia: Problems with Reception (1900-1910). In it, I look at Sherlock Holmes from the perspectives of both elite culture (that is, of more fastidious readers of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, such as the Russian philosopher Vasily Rozanov) and popular culture (Russian imitators of Doyle who wrote about the adventures of Detective Holmes in Russian cities like St. Petersburg, Penza, or Nikolayevsk-on-Amur).

The III Young Scientists Congress took place in the Sirius Science and Art Park on November 28–30, 2023. On the first day of the forum, a discussion was held on the tools and opportunities for engaging international early-career researchers in Russian science. The meeting was organised by HSE University together with members of the Association of Global Universities.
HSE Accepting Works by Students from All Universities for Research Competition
The Higher School of Economics has begun accepting works for its annual Student Research Paper Competition. Applications are due October 15 and can be submitted on the competition’s website.

Results for 2017 Student Research Paper Competition Announced
The research paper competition was held in 21 subjects, including Arts and Design, an area that was just introduced this year. For the first time ever, international students are among the competition’s winners.

On May 12, 2014, a Youth Day took place in Seoul, South Korea as part of the Fifth Clean Energy Ministerial. Anastasia Edelkina, Research Fellow of the ISSEK Foresight Centre, represented Russia at the meeting of young scientists from 16 countries.
