To the Future with Foresight

Foresight research allows us to predict the future, and therefore to be ready for it. This was the main idea of the seminar ‘Scientific, Technical and Innovation Policies ’which was held on October 6th by the HSE Institute for Statistical Studies and Economics of Knowledge with the participation of experts from the University of Manchester.

Media Management in an Era of Change

Why does Metro newspaper have 20 million daily readers? How does the BBC master new technologies and how do they influence the company’s management? We publish the answers given by Swedish professors to these questions at a seminar which took place on September 30th at the HSE. We’re also publishing a video of the presentations given by Nils Enlund on ‘The Role of Technology Factors in Media Systems Development’and Christopher Rosenqwist on ‘Changes in Business Technologies through the example of Metro Newspaper’.

Recently the 17th International Conference on Conceptual Structures (ICCS 2009) was held at the HSE. As part of this event, mathematicians, programmers, linguists and philosophers discussed principles and methods of concept representation and processing. We talked to the conference organizers and some participants about the cumulative effect of interdisciplinary research, potential for graphic representation of knowledge and some architectural surprises of the Russian capital!

To learn means to compare

A project entitled "Morality and Trust in Old and New Market Economies" has been running since 2007 as a joint research teaching activity included in the MA Program of Applied Social Research of Markets (head - Prof. V. Radaev) at the Higher School of Economics and the Research Institute for Sociology, University of Cologne, Germany.

Labor as value and mission

The first seminar of the joint Russian-German sociological project in labor market studies was held last year. The project is continuing and the next seminar will be held at the HSE in April 2009.

Barcelona Path to Ideas and Projects

In autumn the Sociology Association’s First International Forum was held in Barcelona.  Usually the Association holds a congress every four years, but doesn’t usually hold a forum. The most recent Congress was held in Durban (South Africa) in 2006.  The next is planned for Gothenburg (Switzerland) in July 2010. This forum however, dealt with a new topic. It was focused on the concept of Public Sociology.

The HSE Chinese Performance

On October 10-11th, an International forum on "The History of Economic Thinking and Methodology" took place at the HSE. This event was organized by the HSE Economics faculty in cooperation with Wuhan University, China.
